Tv Installation Guide
Do you want to fit a new LCD or Plasma television?
Many people will buy a new TV without giving consideration towards the installation of the screen. As the price of flat screens continues to go down, more and more people are buying larger screens. Fitting a screen onto a wall is a responsible job which should never be attempted by anybody who is unsure.
But if you really want to take it on then here are some steps as a guide to help you in the right direction.
1. Best place for your television?
First step is to have an idea of where the television is going to go. Whether in a corner, over a fireplace, or hung from the ceiling, televisions can be mounted in almost any position. Here are some factors to bear in mind to help you decide:
o Best ergonomically sound viewing angle – in other words, sitting in your usual position, the middle of the screen should be at eye level with the screen straight in front of you.
o Best viewable angle for many viewers – regardless of the “specification” of the television, use a compass and some string to make sure that all viewers are within 35° of the centre of the screen.
o Cabling – decide where you want to route the signal and power cables. Do you want the cables hidden?
o Allow for lighting – take the room lighting into consideration to avoid any glare from lights shining onto the screen.
2. Buy the correct size TV for the room.
If you already have your TV, proceed to step 3 below.
When it comes to picture quality, prior to HDTV, size mattered a lot more than it does now! If you sit too close to a standard-definition television, you will notice the pixels. Ideally you would need to sit 3 – 6 times the screen size away from the television. So for a 52″ television, that would mean sitting 13 – 26ft or 4 – 8m away. However, with HDTVs the ideal sitting position is 1.5 – 3 times the screen size. Therefore for a 52″ screen this would be 6.5 – 13 ft or 2 – 4 m. Use this formula to find your minimum and maximum TV size.
Distance (inches) / 3 = Minimum TV size
Distance (inches) / 1.5 = Maximum television size
It is also worth mentioning for those that watch in 3:4, that if you already have 3:4 ratio television and you’re buying a 16:9, then you will need a larger 16:9 to get the viewable size as a 3:4 screen. A 32″ 4:3 has the same viewable picture (in 4:3 ratio) as a 40″ 16:9.
3. Choose Brackets
A television bracket will be needed to mount the television onto the wall. Generally, they do not come free with the television. They are usually sold separately and will vary depending on model, where you’re mounting and how much movement you want. There are 5 types to choose from: low profile, tilting, swivel , ceiling and cantilever.
o A low profile bracket offers no movement and the TV will be placed close to the wall as if it were a work of art.
o Tilting brackets do just that; tilt up or down.
o A swivel bracket will give you lots movement, allowing you to tilt the screen to the side as well as up and down.
o A cantilever bracket is like the swivel, but also allows you to pull the screen away from the wall. Useful when you want your screen placed in a corner.
o Ceiling brackets sometimes allow you to run the cables through the bracket tube. You can even get motorised ceiling brackets that will move the screen up and hide it in the ceiling.
The most important thing is to check the booklet that came with the TV|television|screen} , and get a bracket that is compatible and that takes the correct load. You will also need to bear in mind how much access you need at the back the screen; for example, a low profile bracket may look neater as it is hung flush to the wall, but has the disadvantage of not having much space for cables behind it.
4. Locate the outside edges of the studs
A wall Stud is a vertical piece of wood that is part of the frame for the room. You ideally want to be screwing into these studs when mounting the wall bracket. To find the studs you will need a stud finder. Make sure you buy one that will work for your wall. Some stud finders will only work with either plasterboard or dry wall, some will do both. Mark the outside edges of studs so you know where to screw.
5. Screw mounting arms for the bracket onto the television
The bracket will consist of two parts; one part will be screwed on to the television and the other to the wall. Find a suitable screwdriver and screw the mounting arms onto the screen until tight.
6. Mark-up on the wall
{Measure the height from the bottom of television up to where the screws that go into wall will be. Ad this value to the height you want the bottom of TV to be from the floor or fireplace. With a spirit level draw a horizontal line. Measure the distance between the screws for mounting bracket, then mark on the wall where the screws will go using your horizontal line and stud markings as guides.
7. Bolt mounting bracket to the wall
You may need to start the holes with power drill making a pilot hole for the screw. Put a dust sheet down by the wall. Be careful not to make the hole too big. A 3mm drill bit should suffice. Bolt the mounting bracket to the wall.
8. Seek help to lift the TV.
If possible, plug your cables into the screen first.
Now that the brackets are on and your cables are in position, then it is time to hang the television. Make sure you get help with this as it is one of the biggest causes of back strains! You should never hang a television or move it on your own.
9. Lock safety locks
Finally, make sure that the safety locks on the mounting bracket are fully secured.
Although this job is doable by those experienced in DIY, it is never as simple as the above suggests. Some people may have brick or stone walls, for example. For the sake of £70 it is well worth bearing in mind the option of getting professionals to do it for you. They will already have the right tools for any eventuality, and it will remove any responsibility from you. If you are in the Hertfordshire, UK, then I can advocate ISS. They will also supply and fit satellite or digital aerial if required.
